Two degrees of firmness for every stage of development
A mattress with two degrees of firmness, always providing the right support for the respective age.
The softer baby side protects against flat head syndrome and provides optimal support for the sensitive spine.
The firmer toddler side ensures greater comfort and ergonomics later on.
Integrated moisture protection
The integrated moisture protection keeps the mattress dry and hygienic – particularly important in the first few months of life, when little accidents happen more frequently. This prevents moisture from penetrating the core, and you can remove the cover and wash it at up to 60°C.
Breathable baby mattress
Optimal air circulation thanks to vertical and horizontal ventilation. Ventilation channels and air-permeable materials wick away moisture and keep the mattress dry.
Supports optimal development of the spine and head
The mattress offers the right balance of stability and elasticity so that your baby does not sink in too deeply. This supports the natural shape of the spine and distributes pressure evenly on the head, preventing head deformities.
Frequently asked questions
A baby spends up to 18 hours a day in bed, so a good mattress is particularly important for restful and safe sleep. The best baby mattress offers firm support, is breathable and is made from tested, non-toxic materials. What you should consider when buying a mattress for your baby:
It should be firm and elastic at the same time – for healthy development
A baby's spine is initially straight. To ensure it develops healthily, the mattress should be firm but elastic.
It must not be too soft, so that the baby cannot suffocate. The head should only sink in about 2–3 cm. This keeps the spine stable and your baby safe and comfortable.
The perfect height and size for a cot
A mattress height of 8 to 10 cm is sufficient for babies. This is flat enough to make it easier to put them to bed, but supportive enough for their low weight. Standard sizes for baby mattresses are 60×120 cm and 70×140 cm – it is important that the mattress fits the cot perfectly, without any gaps at the edges.
Safety – stable, child-friendly and no risk of injury
Babies don't just sleep in their cots, they also romp around and crawl. A stable mattress with a secure edge prevents little feet from slipping between the bars.
Also make sure that the seams are clean and the covers are secure so that nothing slips.
Hygiene and care – washable cover for allergy sufferers
Babies sweat, spit up and drool – that's why a removable, washable cover is a must.
Materials such as cotton or Tencel, which can be washed at 60 °C, are ideal.
For sensitive babies or those with allergies, breathable, mite-resistant mattresses made of natural latex or coconut fibres are particularly suitable.
High-quality, toxin-free materials
High-quality baby mattresses are made from carefully tested materials that are certified according to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. This certification ensures that the materials do not contain any toxins, plasticisers or harmful chemicals. Many modern baby mattresses use a ventilated foam core, which ensures optimal air circulation and wicks away heat and moisture. This keeps the mattress pleasantly dry and hygienic.
What you should look out for when buying (to make sure your baby mattress is really suitable?)
- Safety & certificates: Look for test seals such as ÖKO‑TEX Standard 100 (Class 1)
- Firmness / lying properties: A baby mattress should be stable and not too soft so that the baby does not sink in too deeply.
- Ventilation & material: Good models are well ventilated, have air channels or materials that wick away moisture.
- Suitable size: Check whether the mattress fits your bed (e.g. 60×120 cm, 70×140 cm).
- Price/performance: A high price is no guarantee, but models with good test results often justify the price.
- Care & cover: Washable cover, preferably up to 60 °C, as little accidents happen and the mattress is more durable this way.
The best baby mattress offers safety, breathability and optimal comfort. Since every baby has individual needs, there is no such thing as the best baby mattress, but rather the right mattress for your child: tailored to their age, weight and sleeping habits.
What makes a good baby mattress:
A high-quality baby mattress should:
- be firm and elastic to provide optimal support for your baby's spine
- contain breathable materials that prevent heat build-up
- be free of harmful substances and certified (e.g. according to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class 1 for babies)
- have a removable, washable cover to ensure it remains hygienic
All Träumeland baby mattresses, which are specially developed and produced in Austria, meet these criteria – with certified quality and a focus on healthy baby sleep.
The Träumeland Brise baby mattress was awarded a grade of 1.6 (‘GOOD’) by Stiftung Warentest in its 10/2021 issue, making it one of the highest-rated baby mattresses on the market.
The Brise impressed the testers with its excellent breathability, safe lying properties and good durability. Particular praise was given to the ventilated foam core, which ensures an optimal sleeping climate, and the washable Sleep Safety cover, which perfectly combines hygiene and safety.
The mattress was also tested for harmful substances, safety and workmanship – and received very good ratings in all areas.
A baby mattress should be fairly firm – stable, but not too hard. This is important because babies' spines are still straight in the first few months of life and only develop gradually. A mattress that is too soft allows the baby to sink in too deeply, which can impair posture, make breathing difficult and increase the risk of suffocation.
A firm but elastic lying surface, on the other hand, provides secure support and a healthy body position. The head should not sink more than two to three centimetres so that the neck and back are optimally supported.
When it comes to baby mattresses, you can choose between different sizes and materials. It is important that the mattress fits the bed perfectly, as this is the only way to ensure that your baby sleeps safely without slipping.
The standard size for cot beds/baby beds is 70 × 140 cm, while smaller models measure 60 × 120 cm. Of course, there are also smaller mattresses for co-sleeper beds or cradles. These vary in size depending on the model and are often rounded. Important: there should be no gaps between the mattress and the bed frame to prevent your baby from injuring themselves.
In addition to size, the type of mattress plays an important role. The most common type is the foam mattress/cold foam mattress. It is lightweight, inexpensive and breathable – ideal for everyday use.
The most recommended Träumeland mattress 70x140 is the Brise, which has been awarded a seal of approval by Stiftung Warentest.
