TENCEL^TM

With TENCEL™, a new age of fibre technology has been introduced. TENCEL™ is a cellulose fibre and is obtained from wood in an environmentally-friendly process. It unites the advantages of many fibres: as fine as silk, as strong as polyester, as easy to care for as acrylic, as cool and pleasant to the touch as linen, as warm as wool; it also absorbs much more water vapour than cotton.

The proportion of infants with skull asymmetries and positional abnormalities has increased dramatically in recent years. The soft infant skull deforms and hardens most significantly in the first 12 months. Placing an infant in a one-sided position can have a negative impact on head shape, posture, motor skills and perception. How do misalignments and deformations occur?

Many deformed skulls develop during pregnancy due to cramped conditions (e.g. if the mother's pelvis is too narrow) or increased pressure during birth (e.g. vacuum extraction). Later on, such deformities occur due to infants being placed in the same position for long periods of time. The fact that babies have recently been sleeping mainly on their backs, as this reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, is leading to an increase in flattening of the back of the head.

What are the consequences of head deformities?

A deformed head is not only cosmetically noticeable, but also affects the infant's entire posture, motor skills and perception. With a flattened or laterally deformed skull, the head always rolls onto the flat area. This often causes motor problems. Babies find it difficult to turn over and are repeatedly delayed in their development. Further consequences include spinal asymmetry and increased tension in the upper head joint and jaw muscles, for example. Affected babies are often very restless or are considered to be cry babies.

How can head deformities be treated?

For babies with skull deformities, it is important to relieve pressure from the deformed area, not only in the clinic, but also in daily use at home. In the past, I had to improvise with aids, for example using towels to support the side position. Now I use the side positioning set from the Träumeland Care range. I recommend the CAREFOR pillow for children with deformed heads. The pillow allows the pressure to be specifically relieved from the deformed area. This was not possible before.
