Why a sleeping bag is useful for babies
A sleeping bag for babies is one of the most important measures for creating a safe and healthy sleeping environment. Loose blankets carry the risk of slipping and covering the baby's face, which is a serious hazard, especially for newborns. A sleeping bag keeps the body protected while allowing arms and legs to move freely.
When can a baby start wearing a sleeping bag?
A baby can wear a sleeping bag from birth, provided that it fits well and does not have any unnecessary space. It is important that you do not use an additional blanket, but rely solely on the sleeping bag. Many parents wonder how long they can use a sleeping bag: as long as your baby is still sleeping in a safe place and the sleeping bag fits in length, often until toddler age. When your child starts to sit up or get out of bed on their own, it is advisable to switch from a classic baby sleeping bag to a sleeping bag with feet.
Which sleeping bags for summer, winter or all year round?
The right sleeping bag for every season – thanks to matching TOG values
Because babies grow and temperatures change, our sleeping bags come in different sizes with adjustable straps that grow with your child. This means that the sleeping bag adapts to your child's growth and accompanies you through the night for longer. Children have very different needs depending on the season, which is why we offer sleeping bags in three TOG values. Our sleeping bags are made of high-quality, tested materials and have child-safe zips so that you can quickly change your baby's nappy at night without taking them out of their sleeping bag.
0,5 TOG: for summer nights (from approx. 24 °C) the summer sleeping bag for babies is perfect here
1,5 TOG: for the transition period (20–24 °C) the Signature baby sleeping bag with 1,5 TOG
2,5 TOG: for cooler nights (16–22°C) the Träumeland all-season sleeping bag for babies is ideal
The TOG table provides an overview of all recommendations, allowing you to easily create the perfect sleeping environment for both summer and winter.
What should a baby wear under a sleeping bag?
The clothing worn under the sleeping bag depends on the room temperature and the TOG value:
At ≥ 24 °C: A simple short-sleeved bodysuit is usually sufficient.
At 20–24 °C: Thin pyjamas or long bodysuit + light pyjamas.
At 16–20 °C: pyjamas + a second layer if necessary (e.g. thin romper suit).
At < 16 °C: Warm pyjamas or woollen underwear if necessary, but no blanket over the sleeping bag!
The right size for sleeping bags – so your baby sleeps safe
To ensure your baby sleeps safely and securely, it is crucial to choose the right size of sleeping bag. Our Träumeland sleeping bags are available in many sizes – from 50/56, 56/62, 62/68, 68/74, 80/86, 92/98 to 104 and 110. This means you can find the right sleeping bag for every age and stage of development.
Our tip for choosing the right size:
Ziehe von der Körperlänge deines Kindes die Kopflänge ab und addiere etwa zehn Zentimeter. Diese Länge sollte der Schlafsack haben, damit dein Baby nicht hineinrutscht, aber genug Platz zum Strampeln bleibt. Dank verstellbarer, mitwachsender Träger kannst du die Länge zusätzlich individuell anpassen und den Schlafsack länger nutzen.
With the right size, you create the basis for safety, comfort and freedom of movement – regardless of whether your baby has just been born or is already actively moving around in their cot.
Further information:
- The neckline should be sized so that a finger fits between the neck and the fabric – not too tight, not too loose.
- Armholes should allow freedom of movement, but not be so wide that the clothing slips.
