Which MATTRESS Is Right for Which Age?
A Guide to Development, Sleep Needs, and the Right MATTRESS for Babies and Children

What kind of mattress does my baby need? When is the right time to switch to a bigger bed? And how can I tell if my child’s current mattress is still appropriate for their Age?

Especially in the first few years of life, your child’s sleep patterns are constantly changing. A newborn who needs many short sleep periods grows into an active toddler, and later into a school-age child with a growing body and entirely new needs for comfort and support of the body. That’s why the MATTRESSES should always be suited to your child’s current stage of development.

In this guide, we’ll show you which MATTRESSES are best for each age group, what your child’s approximate sleep needs are, which bed is right for which stage, and what you should pay special attention to when choosing baby and children’s MATTRESSES.

1. How big should a baby mattress be?

The correct baby mattress size depends on the type of sleeping setup you choose, whether it’s a co-sleeper, pram, baby cot, or a model with special dimensions. At Träumeland, you’ll find a wide selection of premium baby mattresses designed to fit every bed precisely.

Each Träumeland mattress has features like a breathable 3D air cushion layer and moisture-regulating materials, ensuring optimal air circulation and baby sleep safety. To prevent risks such as overheating or restricted breathing, it’s crucial that the mattress fits snugly: there should be no more than 2 cm of space between the mattress and the bed frame. A properly fitted air-permeable baby mattress supports both comfort and safety for your infant.

The mattress shouldn't be too soft

Babies, in particular, should sleep on a firm, dimensionally stable surface. A mattress that’s too soft allows your baby to sink in, which can lead to CO2 rebreathing.

The mattress should be Breathable

Children—especially babies—are not yet able to regulate their body temperature properly. The MATTRESSES should therefore effectively wick away heat and moisture

The cover should be Washable

With babies and toddlers, accidents can happen quickly—spilled milk, a leaky diaper, or other small mishaps. That’s why the cover should be removable and washable.

Adult mattresses are not automatically suitable for children

Children have different body proportions than adults. Especially for babies and toddlers, the focus is not on zoned support but on a stable lying-surface.

How important is a small baby mattress?

A small baby mattress is essential for newborns, especially in co-sleepers and prams. Being thinner than cot mattresses, they’re made from high-quality, breathable materials and often feature 3D air cushion layers and ventilation channels for optimal air circulation and safe baby sleep.
If you're using a second-hand pram, replacing the mattress with a moisture-regulating, hypoallergenic baby mattress helps prevent skin issues and allergies, ensuring a clean and healthy sleep environment.

Breathable Mattress for Children’s Beds, Youth Beds & Floor Beds

Our youth mattresses are perfect for children aged 2 to 15 years (up to 90–120 kg) and support healthy growth with point-elastic comfort, air circulation, and moisture-regulating materials. Available in standard sizes and special dimensions up to 180 x 200 cm, they’re ideal for youth beds, children’s beds, and floor beds.

Did you know? Our youth mattresses are so durable and supportive that even adults can use them occasionally, whether comforting children at night or staying close when they're unwell. Thanks to point-elastic support and premium mattress quality, comfort and performance remain consistent for both children and adults.

To ensure your children’s or youth mattress provides lasting comfort and performance, keep the following in mind:

  • Occasional use by adults: Our premium youth mattresses are specially designed for the body structure of children. Daily use by adults over a full year may affect the long-term material quality, so we recommend limiting use to occasional situations.
  • Regular rotation: If an adult sleeps on the mattress from time to time, be sure to rotate the head and foot sections regularly. This helps maintain the point-elastic support and extends the mattress’s lifespan.
  • Perception of the degree of hardness: If the mattress feels too soft for you as an adult, don’t worry: it’s intentionally designed to match the ergonomic needs of children, offering them optimal sleep comfort and safety.

By following these tips, you’ll preserve the quality of your breathable mattress and ensure many nights of healthy, restful sleep for your child.

2. Common Mistakes When Buying Mattresses for Children

There is no one-size-fits-all hardness level that is suitable for children. As a general guideline:

  • Babies often need a firmer lying-surface
  • Toddlers need a medium-hard, dimensionally stable MATTRESS
  • School-age children through teenagers need MATTRESSES that offer point elasticity and support and adapt to their body weight
Baby mattress Premium ocean blue cross-section mattress core

What does point elasticity mean and why is it important for baby mattresses?

Point elasticity means that the baby mattress only yields where pressure is applied, while surrounding areas remain stable. In a point-elastic mattress, only parts of the body like the head, shoulders or hips sink in slightly, while the rest stays well supported. This is essential for both infant sleep comfort and safe baby sleep.

  • Support for natural spine development
Newborns have a straight spine that develops gradually. A point-elastic baby mattress provides proper spinal support and even pressure distribution, relieving stress on the body and preventing discomfort or strain. It also helps reduce the risk of common deformations, such as plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), by allowing the head to rest gently without excessive pressure.

  • Preventing incorrect posture
A mattress that is too soft or overly elastic may cause the baby to sink in too deeply, potentially leading to poor posture and future back problems. Point-elastic support helps avoid this risk and promotes healthy development.

  • Enhanced safety and breathability
If a baby’s head sinks too deeply into the mattress, it can increase the risk of CO₂ rebreathing, which may contribute to asphyxia. A breathable baby mattress with point elasticity helps keep the airways open, reduces the risk of overheating, and supports safe, restful sleep.

2.2 The mattress cover

A cover made of high-quality and air-permeable materials is just as important as the foam used in the mattress core.

Discover the advantages of the different cover materials and cover types:

  • "sleep Safety" cover with TENCELTM: Cover with TENCEL™ fibers - a natural fiber that absorbs moisture, ensures a dry sleeping climate and has temperature-regulating properties. Particularly gentle on sensitive baby skin. The cover is equipped with integrated moisture protection that does not restrict air circulation.
  • "Better Dreams" cover with TENCELTM X Refibra: In addition to the natural TENCEL™ fiber, 8% of the cover is made from recycled cotton. This cover also has a moisture protection function that does not restrict air circulation.
  • Cotton cover: Made from 100% soft, hard-wearing and skin-friendly cotton.
  • KBA cotton cover: The natural and air-permeable mattress cover is made from 100% organic cotton from controlled organic cultivation and is particularly breathable.
  • Youth cover with TENCELTM: Cover with TENCEL™ fibers - a natural fiber that absorbs moisture, ensures a dry sleeping climate and has temperature-regulating properties. Particularly gentle on the skin.
  • Youth cover with viscose: Cover with viscose fibers - temperature-regulating and easy-care, ensures a pleasant sleeping climate by effectively wicking away moisture.

Additional side ventilation: Many covers are equipped with special ventilation bands. These are extremely air-permeable and ensure even better air circulation to prevent overheating.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions on the Topic

From birth, a firm, well-fitting, and Breathable baby mattress is ideal. It should not be too soft and should fit perfectly in the crib. Integrated wetness-protection is optional.
A larger mattress makes sense if your child doesn’t have enough space, the mattress is getting too short, you’re switching to a new bed, or your child needs more room to move around. For babies up to about 1 year old, it’s important that the mattress isn’t too soft so your baby doesn’t sink into it. After that, the hardness of the mattress should be determined by your child’s weight. A mattress with two levels of hardness is ideal. This way, you can simply flip the mattress, ensuring your child always has optimal support.
For babies and young children, traditional adult zoned mattresses or youth-mattresses are usually not a good choice. Young children need even, stable, and age-appropriate support. For teenagers or school-age children, an Ergonomic mattress with proper adjustment may be a good choice. Otherwise, we recommend a simple soft to medium-hard mattress.
